| Quality olive products from the cool state.
Tasmania
produces only a small proportion of the total Australian olive oil and table
olives production, but the product is differentiated on quality. Our cool climate gives a longer growing season, producing inherently superior quality oils. However we record a lower yield compared to mainland Australia. Tasmanian Olive Council is the state’s peak industry body, representing all sectors of the industry and dedicated to the vision that the Tasmanian olive industry be recognised worldwide as a leading producer of premium cold climate extra virgin olive oil and olive products.
Industry Profile The Tasmanian olive industry is growing force in the agricultural sector, producing both olive oil and table olive products. This young industry had its first significant plantings in the mid 1990s. We estimate that there are 120,000 trees planted in groves in many areas of the state. Grove sizes range from 100 to 17,000 trees. The majority of these trees are in the 3-6 year age group and are producing first, second or third commercial oil crop. Harvesting occurs from mid May through June depending on variety and location. Two medium size and six small processing plants are operational in the state. The majority of growers are focused exclusively on olive oil production—particularly premium quality extra virgin oil for both domestic and international markets.
